Purposes: The official website of a hospital is often the first point of contact of health services by the public. It should be able to highlight the importance of nursing in the health care system. However, few international studies have examined the presence of nursing on hospital websites, suggesting that the role of the nursing profession in the health care system is not being seriously valued. In view of the lack of similar studies in Taiwan, the aim of the present study was to investigate the presence and content of nursing information on hospital websites in Taiwan. Methods: During March 1 to 8, 2015, 90 hospitals were identified based on the list of contracted medical care institutions, provided by the National Health Insurance Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare. Of them, 18 were medical centers and 72 were regional hospitals. The websites of these hospitals were located using the Google search engine. The characteristics of the located websites were recorded using a self-constructed structural checklist adapted from the literature. Fisher’s exact test was used to compare the distribution of the characteristics between medical centers and regional hospitals. Results: Results showed that the presence of nursing on the hospital website in Taiwan was not high. None of the hospitals had a direct link to the nursing department on their home page. In terms of the website of the nursing department, 50% had a section on “latest news,” 57% had “general information,” 52% had “health education corner,” 39% had “research publications,” 42% had a link to recruitment, and 29% had links to websites of nursingrelated organizations. In addition, only 38% of the home page of the nursing department indicated when the page was last updated. Conclusions: Hospital website of nursing department had not fully utilized the strengths of the web to showcase the characteristics and image of nursing profession. It is recommended that nursing departments should view and learn from each other when constructing their website that can highlight the unique characteristics and needs of their own department. At the same time, the website should be able to enhance the public's awareness of the nursing profession and the professional image of nursing staff. |
