The purpose of this research is to understand and quantify the impact of business value planning (BVP) and social factors [building human resources (BHR) and partnerships (BP)] on business-IT alignment (BIA) in the Indian context and to assess and quantify the strength of interaction among the constructs. A theoretical framework was proposed which included business value planning (BVP), human resources (BHR), building partnership (BP), and business-IT alignment (BIA), and the construct validity was established. Sample data from 65 firms were obtained through a structured questionnaire comprising 23 statements grouped in four sections, one for each of the constructs. The respondents, chosen by stratified random sampling, were middle and senior management executives with 5+ years of experience in system integration in the IT industry in Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Noida, India. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to assess the impact and to quantify the relationships among the constructs. Research results indicate that business value planning has a significant total effect on business-IT alignment, followed by BP and BHR. The tested framework suggests that business value planning plays a key role in achieving BIA and is supported by partnership and human resources. |
