Su's Elucidation on Changes is the representative works of Su Shih's theory on Changes, who was the great writer in North Song Dynasty. This book integrates theories of various schools. Taking Changes as the tool, this book focuses on establishing doctrines for people engaged in fortune telling. Therefore, Su Shi has always been classified to the School of Doctrine. However, after making a general survey of his book, we find that he applied not only theories of the doctrine, but also those of image-numberology in Han Dynasty, hence the integration of both doctrine and image-numberology. When talking about Changes, People in Han Dynasty paid much attention to the theory of Gua-qi. Particularly, Su Shi attached great importance to the twelve hexagram of information. The paper clarifies it from the three perspectives: “Gua-qi mode used in season prediction”, “people's fortune telling based on yin and yang information theory” and “divinatory symbols illustration, image-numberology and doctrine”. Based on discussions on Su Shih's twelve hexagram of information, we aim to make a tentative study of Su Dongpo's theory about image-numberology. |
