In Qufu, birth place of Confucius in the province of Shandong (China), the town's space has been gradually « sacralized » with time. This work is the first step of a French multidisciplinary reflexion about that Chinese town. It examines first the General planning of the town of Qufu, an ambitious program which aims at developing the extraordinary international turistic potentialities of such a place. The program consists in transforming four relatively close towns in an urban community, giving to each town a specific role. Secondly, and in relation to what precedes, the present town of Qufu, an urban and rural area which has until now more or less escaped modernization, is to be restructured. The special character of this town linked to all dynasties of Chinese history is first taken into account, before tackling the current development projects. A program of urban protection was started, which intends to preserve a rich heritage. Finally the study examines briefly in a wider prospect the conciliation of a pilgrimage place's protection with the necessities of local and regional development. |
