Professor Chou Fa-Kao is a famous linguist in the world. His study on Chinese linguistics is very extensive, and he proposed lots of opinions that enlightened academia. In this article, we introduce and discuss Chou Fa-Kao's studies, especially on the historical Chinese phonology, and the characteristics of his linguistic theories, and his influence to the posterity.This article consists of the following parts:1. Professor Chou Fa-Kao's study on the archaic Chinese. 2. Professor Chou Fa-Kao's study on consonant clusters. It is a milestone in the study of this area. 3. Professor Chou Fa-Kao's study on the middle Chinese. For a long period, one of the problems in middle Chinese is about whether that if the voiced consonants are aspirated. Chou Fa-Kao indicated that, "Regarding the question that if the voiced consonants are aspirated, it is insignificant in discrimination of their meanings." What Chou Fa-Kao pointed out gives enlightenment to academic circles.4. Professor Chou Fa-Kao's study on chongniu: According to the fanqie xilian of Xuanying's “Yiqie Jing Yinyi", he indicated that there was the distinction of chongniu in this document. Moreover, the distinction of two categories of chongniu words focuses on the main vowels in syllables. Furthermore, the other significant findings of Professor Chou Fa-Kao's study are that besides in the book “Guangyun", the distinction of chongniu in fanqie of the labial sounds existed also in books such as “Qieyun"“, Jingdian Shiwen",“Xuanying Yinyi" and “Xuilin Yinyi". 5.In the last paragraph, we will introduce Professor Chou Fa-Kao's study on linguistics of the Chinese Buddhist texts. |
