Beginning with her first novel, Eileen Zhang's literary technique has received widespread critical acclaim. Many have claimed that she produced her most representative work during her early period (1943–1945), for by this time she had already mastered the art of literary embellishment. Thus her work has been frequently praised for its visual splendor, rich color scheme, and vivid hues. This paper makes a detailed study of Chuan qi (傳奇 Short Stories), a collection of Chang's early work, with a focus on her use of the aesthetic characteristics of color words in developing her distinctive style. |
