The continuation and prosperity of a poetry society, or poets group, always bases on the strong cohesion among its members. The uninterrupted publicaion of the poetry magazine, Li, for more than forty years, is an anomaly in the history of Taiwan literature. This has to do with the founders, who worked so hard to establish it and continued to support it through the years. From the very beginning, Chen Qianwu 陳千武 has been a decisive figure in setting up the direction of the magazine and continued to play an indispensable role in supporting it. Throughout the years, he emphasizes an intellectual, critical stance in writing poetry, which shapes the dominant style as found in Li magazine. He, for instance, wrote many so-called “pan-political” poems in the authoritarian 1960s and 1970s, showing a creative spirit that has come to influence many later-comers.In addition, Chen displays no reservation in encouraging such younger poets as Zheng Jiongming 鄭炯明, Li Mingyung 李敏勇, Chen Mingtai 陳明台, Guo Chengyi 郭成義, and Chen Hongsen 陳鴻森, who later on became the leading voice of realistic spirit in Taiwan poetry.Since Chen Qianwu has played so important role in the founding and development and has set up the philosophy and characteristics of the poetry magazine Li, this article will attempt to depict the man, his development of poetic style and his contribution to the overall development of Taiwan modern poetry. |
