The Shihkang Library in Taichung County reopened with a new look and collection of over 30,000 titles following repairs after the September 21, 1999 earthquake. Library director Chen Hsincheng (陳信正) said that under a new book loan policy, toddlers as young as one year old can borrow books from the library.
Before the new policy was introduced, children rarely visited the Shihkang library and primary school students could not get access to reference books for writing essays. The mayor of Shihkang, Liu Hung-chi (劉宏碁), therefore asked the library to open a reading room for children. With the help of part-time student workers, the reading room was completed and opened to the public in time for the start of the new school year in September. Books from the library can be borrowed by the residents of Shihkang and the neighboring towns of Tungshih, Heping, Hsinshe and Fengyuan. |
