We start with the discussion of Taiwan’s international status and then review the alien regimes that have reigned over the island so far. After refuting China as the fatherland of the Taiwanese and pondering over the relations between Taiwan and the United States, we are certain that Taiwan is the motherland of the Taiwanese. We then explore how the right to national self-determination is exercised and how sovereignty is earned. It is found that plebiscite is neither sufficient nor necessary condition. In conclusion, the reason why the Taiwanese have not demanded for exercising their right to self-determination is due to their self-imposed iron cage of the Republic of China and confused national identity. |
