Treatment for endometrial cancer usually involves total hysterectomy and salpingo-oophorectomy, often accompanied by lymphadenectomy. Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy in premenopausal women cause significant adverse long-term effects in bone, heart and neurologic health as well as in quality of life. In recent studies, ovarian preservation in premenopausal women with early-stage endometrial cancer seems to be safe and not associated with an increase in cancer related morality. However, preserving ovaries should be performed cautiously and with a consideration of the patient’s desires after providing a full explanation of the potential risks. It should also be kept in mind the continuous follow-up would be necessary for patients with preserved ovaries after hysterectomy. |
