This paper will discuss poems on dreams written by Qing poetesses. The poems are divided into three categories according to the theme of the dreams: family members, homeland, and fantasies. The first two categories are poems based on dreams about these poetesses’ actual life experiences, expressing the joy and sorrow of reuniting with family members, and of their nostalgia for their home. Poems in the third category transcend reality and describe fantasy dreams of traveling about fairylands. The poems show that these poetesses were searching for an independent identity, which search consisted of a look at their roles in society and a look back to their origins. They used dreams in their poems as a way of expressing the shared experiences and collective hopes of women. |
