The purpose of this study is to analyze freshmen's physical fitness status at Tung-Fang Design University from year 2008 to 2010. The total number of freshmen involved in this study from 2008 to 2010 was 1365; 656 were male and 709 were female. The analyses mainly focus on their current physical fitness status and the variances in different academic years. The instrument adopted in this study is the physical fitness survey developed by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan. The data were run by SPSS software and the results show as the following: Comparing with national data of other college students, the freshmen at this institute show average performances in body mass index, muscle strength, and cardiovascular endurance. Their performances in body flexibility and explosive power are lower than the national average. For male freshmen, their performances in explosive power and cardiovascular endurance decline yearly. For female freshmen, their body flexibility performance decline year by year. The freshmen's overall performances in physical fitness are lower than the national average. Male students' cardiovascular endurance and females' body flexibility and explosive power decline in every year. Based on the research results, to improve students' physical fitness especially in body flexibility and explosive power performances, students are encouraged to do some exercises including jogging, power walking and stretching regularly. In addition, in their physical education curriculum, weights training should be integrated and emphasized. |
