The purpose of this investigation was to understand the contents of heavy metals (Cadmium, Mercury) of brown rice in Taiwan. From 1980, January to 1981, June we had collected 150 samples of 1989 first crop brown rice and 75 samples of 1989 second crop brown rice from governmental warehouses of Food Bureau, and the other 24 samples were from local market. The results of examination showed that the average content of cadmium is 0.043ppm (N.D.~0.220ppm), mercury is 0.004ppm (N.D.~0.022ppm), both of which did not exceed the content limit of heavy metals announced by our Department of Health (Mercury is below 0.05ppm, Cadmium is below 0.5ppm). The investigation showed that the contents of heavy metal of rice (cadmium, mercury) are quite low in Taiwan, so that people need not to worry about the sanitation and safety of eating rice. |
