The paper first describes the functions and types of the market-towns on the west Taiwan between the years of 1684 and 1895, and then discusses the process of regional formation of each market-town area in middle Taiwan. It finally explores the inter-regional interaction and transformation based on the changes both of numbers and functions of market-towns within each market region. According to the commercial network that was taken shape by trade, the paper divide the middle Taiwan into four market regions: Ta-chia, Ta-tun, Chang-hua, and Yun-lin. The paper offers further interpretation on regional interactions and transformations based on the changes of both of numbers and functions of market-towns. |
