Since 1973, the Ministry of Justice has published the Crime Situations and Analyses annually, presenting various crime statistics and explanations. After governmental reorganization on July 1st, 2013, Academy for the Judiciary, Ministry of Justice, which incorporates the Crime Prevention Research Center, has the new part of its functions that is to investigate, analyze, and research the essential crime issues in our country, serving as a national think tank of criminal policies. To enhance the quality for academic study and to keep abreast with international crime prevention research, this annual book was contracted to the university professionals. The academic professionalism not only helps this long-standing statistical volume to improve its quality, but also presents highlights of the research in Chinese and English. The Academy also publishes the research results and conducts academic conference to show more influential power of foresight. In addition to adopting the official data, which include statistics from the Ministry of Justice, National Police Agency, Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Judicial Yuan, our research also adopt the crossnational comparative analysis as the research methodology. Meetings and focus group interviews were also conducted to collect necessary information. This 2014 edition has continued the traditional statistics basis, presenting fully the crime trend and status quo, while international comparison for crime situation was also
added. It also presents the judicial innovations, charts and figures to reinforce interpreting and analysis and improves results explanation and policy implications.
Additionally, the current report studied the homicide committed by Zheng in Taipei MRT, May 2014 and the case of killing a detective in a night club in Xinyi district, Taipei, as well as proposed the related prevention policy suggestions. Moreover, the corresponding policy suggestions and future research based on the overall crime situations in 2014 and various innovative focuses observed in the research were also provided, expecting to have the current study become the most authoritative report on crime trend in Taiwan. |
