Nearly one-third of cancer patients are found to have thrombocytosis at diagnosis and before treatment. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the incidence of thrombocytosis in various cancers and its association with patient outcome. In gynecologic cancers, preoperative elevations in platelet counts have been described for ovarian, cervical, endometrial, and vulvar cancer. Several studies suggest that thrombocytosis may be an independent poor prognostic factor in locally advanced cervical and endometrial cancers. Various studies investigating the presence of thrombocytosis in ovarian cancers yield inconsistent results about the association between thrombocytosis and survival. More prospective trials are needed to elucidate the correlation between the thrombocytosis and clinical outcome. |
