Malignant mixed müllerian tumors (MMMT), are relatively rare gynecologic tumors that occur throughout the female genital tract, most commonly in the uterus. Ovarian MMMT is extremely rare with very poor prognosis. A 67-year-old menopausal woman had suffered from abdominal fullness. Evaluations showed massive ascites with suspicious heteroechoic pelvic mass by ultrasound, 1597 U/ml of serum CA-125 but negative for upper and lower gastrointestinal examination. Under the impression of ovarian malignancy, the patient underwent exploratory laparotomy with pelvic tumor and disseminated peritoneal carcinomatosis. Optimal debulking surgery was completed with surgical-pathological stage IIIC of ovarian MMMT, containing largely poorly differentiated carcinoma and focal chondrosarcoma. The patient is free of disease for one year. We concluded that optimal debulking surgery following the combination of paclitaxel and carboplatin is worthy of further evaluation, based on the relative success in this case. |
