From August to December 1993, 285 aquatic food samples were purchased from a wholesale center, traditional market, supermarket and fresh food processing center in the Taipei area, and were screened for Aeromonas, The total incidence was 52%. The incidence for A. veronii / sobria DNA group 8, A. media-like DNA group SA and A. hydrophila DNA group I, was 25%, 19%, and 13%, respectively, Ninty-five biochemical characteristics were determined for 298 Aeromonas isolates, and II tests exhibited major differences among the Aeromonas. These tests were assumed to differentiate 8 Aeromonas species, namely, glucose-1-phosphate, glucose- 6-phosphate, bromosuccinic acid, D, L-lactic acid, γ-aminobutyric acid, N-acetyl-Dgalactosamine, propionic acid, cellobiose, α-hydroxybutyric acid, acetic acid and β-hydroxybutyric acid. For samples collected from the wholesale center, theincidence of Aeromonas in the aqua-cultured samples was signiftcantly higher than that in the marine samples (p<0.05). For the marine samples, the incidence of Aeromonas was significantly higher for the samples from the supermarket or fresh food processing center compared to those from the wholesale center (p<0.05). For the aqua-cultured samples, no significant differences (p>0.05) were observed for samples collected from the different locations (wholesale center vs. traditional market; fresh food processing center vs. supermarket). |
