Chi-lu Chen (1923-2014) was an eminent scholar and a forefather of modern folklore research in Taiwan. As the editor of the supplement “Taiwanese Customs” that was published in Taiwan Justice Weekly News (Gung Lun Bao) in early post-war Taiwan, he contributed greatly to Taiwan’s folklore studies. Based on the 2013 collected edition of “Taiwanese Customs” and the oral history of Chi-lu Chen, this article reconstructs the historical context of the emergence of folklore knowledge in Taiwan and reveals Chen’s significant contributions to folklore research. In addition to investigating the life of Chen and his research on folklore and anthropology, this article analyzes the special features of Chen’s academic writing. This article consists of five sections: 1) A brief history of Taiwan folklore research and a detailed study of “Taiwanese Customs,” 2) Chi-lu Chen between folklore and academia, 3) The emergence of Taiwan’s folklore knowledge, 4) The continuity of collecting and the spread of folklore knowledge, 5) A conclusion with a chronology of Chen’s life. In short, this paper highlights the importance of Chen and Gung Lun Bao’s supplement “Taiwanese Customs” in Taiwan folklore research. |
