This investigation was the first market survey conducted pursuant to DOH regulation of 11 October 2006 which imposed a rule for aflatoxin contamination limit of 15 ppb in a list of fifteen Chinese herbal materials.Total 300 samples, 20 each of the fifteen herbals, were collected in 2007 and 2008, mainly from local manufacturers who routinely process bulk materials from various supply sources. All samples were prepared and tested according to CNS standard 4090 N6097.Among the samples tested, 287 were found in compliance to the current rule. Among 13 samples failing the set limit, six were Corydalidis Rhizoma, and seven Nelumbinis Semen. Notably, an exceptional amount of 429.5 ppb was detected in one N. Semen sample. Tracing the source of the unlawful materials, 12 were documented as import from China and one remained unknown. |
