National Central Library (NCL) has now entered its 55th year of proud service in Taiwan, and with the diversification of its collections, as well as its international integration with other libraries, it has become imperative that NCL undergo transformation. Amid the succession of dedicated directors, the constant striving of library employees, and enabled by the generous assistance from private individuals, groups, government organizations and help from within, the 12 years since NCL's renaming, from 1996 on through 2008 have witnessed a transition, from tradition and conservatism to modernity and openness. This transition is evident regardless of whether one considers the library's vision of service or its management philosophy. Moving forward, the challenge of how to‘mold and shape,’how to metamorphose NCL into its new‘form,’will be substantial, arduous, and driven by hope. Having crossed into this new era,“2009 National Central Library Service Year”(2009 NCL Service Year) is the first step on this long r ad. Standing in the current of library development history in Taiwan, we lift our heads and stride into the future with determination, poised for posterity to witness our accomplishments, confident in our ability to make history. |
