With the advent of the Internet and information technologies develop, archives have moved finding aids from bookshelves and card catalogs into the websites. Archival repositories need to rethink the display of information system based on an analysis of user needs and that will lead to more effective user interactions. This study conducted task-based usability testing, observations, and in-depth interviews to obtain users' perspectives for online finding aids. An archival information system was selected to investigate the usability questions about navigation, access function, display, and terminology of online finding aids. The results are summarized as follows: (1) browsers of non-internet explorer can't display smooth, (2) search icon is unapparent, (3) collection identifier can't be realized, (4) the commentary of result sorting is blurred, (5) the function of browse by hierarchy can't understand intuitively, (6) the procedure of order and view records is complicated, (7) the user help and search guide aren't detailed enough, and (8) the response time of system is slower. According to the result, the suggestions will be proposed for improving the system interface functions. |
