Jingxue bocailu 經學博采錄 written by Gui Wencan 桂文燦 records the activities and works of Confucian scholars during four reigns of the Qing dynasty, from Emperor Daoguang 道光 to Emperor Guangxu 光緒. It not only successfully preserved literature for posterity, but also kept alive the names of many obscure scholars so that future generations may appreciate their work. However, this book, twice printed and twice fallen into obscurity, remains poorly studied. This paper offers a brief sketch of the author's life and career, discusses the content and value of the work, and compares the different versions in order to assist scholars studying the history of late Qing Confucian scholarship. |
