Book Review: Kuang-hua Chen's The Construction and Applications of Citation Index

《引文索引之建置與應用》一書可謂臺灣地區第一本針對引用文獻索引（Citation Index，以後行文以引文索引稱之）資料庫，建置之實作專著。作者為臺灣人文學引文索引資料庫（Taiwan Humanities Citation Index，簡稱THCI）之負責人，在行政院國家科學委員會人文學研究中心（Center for Humanities Research，簡稱HRC）贊助下，執行THCI之建置工作。

On the basis of building the Taiwan Humanities Citation Index (THCI) database, this book not only demonstrates the construction of citation index database but also describes some theories and applications of citation index. It is the first work, in Taiwan, discussing thoroughly the structure of a Chinese citation index database. Special features include hardware, software, system platform, programming schema, standards and policy, etc for creating a citation index database. Moreover, the current development of citation index systems in China and Japan is also covered and, therefore, this book provides valuable information for readers. However, some minor flaws, such as the out-of-date introduction of ISI's citation index databases, lack of description on some of the figures and tables, etc., could be modified to make the book more readable.
