In spite of that high prevalence of pain and negative consequences for elders in long-term care facilities and the importance of pain management are addressed, pain management for elders in long-term care facilities is still ignored. However, appropriate pain assessment and management is the first priority to maintain quality of care, improve clinical difficulty and reflect formal caregivers' professional ability. Due to lack of pain quality indicator in long-term care facilities with sound psychometric properties, clinical professionals in long-term care facilities are unable to conduct internal quality control. As such, the aims of this paper is to describe the importance of pain management, current status of pain management quality in institutions in Taiwan, rationale of developing pain quality indicator, quality monitor in institutions, principles of developing pain quality indicator and encounter challenge of developing pain indicator. |
