New Books Monthly began publishing in January 1999 by the National Central Library (NCL). There are 200 issues containing 2,716 articles, including 964 book reviews as of August 2015. For exploring the bibliometric characteristics of book reviews, 964 book reviews are taken as population. The purpose of this paper is to understand the number of article and book review published in the Monthly every year, article length of book review, authorship of book review, publisher of the books reviewed, subject of the books reviewed and so on. The conclusions of this paper include: (1) 13 articles published in each issue by average, book review published each lasting an average of five, accounting for the total number of articles published in 39%; (2) published an annual average of 160 articles with 58 book reviews; (3) among the Top 20 publishers of books reviewed, the NCL is the only government agency, and the rest are commercial publishers; (4) the percentage of translated works being reviewed is approximately equal to that of translated works among total annual publications assigned with ISBN; (5) most authors of book reviews are freelancers. Suggestions for the future development of the Monthly include: to strengthen the subject bibliographies, to enhance content and scope, to use information technology to establish a platform for book reviews on new publications in Taiwan, to combine book reviews on Internet, to delivery abundant and diversified information for new books. |
