Disciples of Luo teaching compiled their sixth genealogy in 1924; it recorded over 20 temples of Luo teaching in western Fujian and eastern Jiangxi, especially in Ninghua, Qingliu, Mingxi and Shicheng county. This paper addresses questions of why they compiled their own genealogy in a Confucian way. Based on historical, textual and field studies, this paper examines the history of Luo teaching from the mid Ming Era to 1924. The findings suggest that the development of Luo was an action of survival strategy, aiming to challenge traditions through religious and social empowerment. |
