Cancer (malignant tumor) has ranked the number-one cause of death in Taiwan for many years. According to the statistics report from the Department of Health, the number-three cause of death due to cancer is the colorectal cancer since the case fatality rate of colorectal cancer in Taiwan is increasing year by year. The occurrence of cancers is caused by inheritance or/and environment. Although colon cancer sometimes has a familial or hereditary component, it usually doesn't. Around 15-20% of colorectal cancer cases are due to familial predisposition. The vast majority of colorectal cancers are sporadic colon cancer. They are likely to occur by chance, being not related to genetics or family history. It's thought that colorectal cancer appears to be multifactorial in origin and includes environmental factors and a genetic component. The early diagnosis becomes very important since the prognosis after surgery for final-staged colon cancer is not good. Colon cancer is a kind of indolent tumors, but it has a higher incidence rate of metastases. Therefore, early cancer screening along with TCM treatment is helpful for the treatment, control and decrease in death rate of colon cancer. |
