It is widely recognized that initial conditions may shape subsequent complexity evolution. However, the effect of initial conditions of new ventures was quite scarcely known. This research aims to grasp the strategic scripts of new ventures during their early stage. To meet this challenge, a text-based cognitive map (TBCM) method was employed to analyze both Healtheon and Medscape (1995-2001) cases. The first TBCM process came out with a 21-component-framework. The second TBCM process traced both cases' initial strategic scripts. This research observed that the priority setting of critical components might decide their configurations of business model although both cases employed similar dominant logic. Finally, venture team intensively configures business model before critical moments such as IPO could help attain a strategic momentum. |
