"Light of fishing boats on two streams" was a Taiwanese art song written by composer Kuo, Chih Yuan. This article uses the first sentence of lyrics of the song "two rivers confluence into a stream" as the introduction to implicate the duality of individuality and sociality of Kuo and his works. The lyrics describes how these two features are like two streams which sometimes parallel, crisscross or converge. This paper first gives an introduction about Kuo’s life and divides his creative process into three periods, then enters the duality of the theme to explore his "song works" that is influenced by social changes and his "instrumental works" that expresses individuality. Moreover, the "song works" is divided into "Chinese art songs" that is compromised under the social environment and "Taiwanese art songs" that reflects his personal philosophy. Finally, this paper analyzes Kuo’s Taiwanese art songs and instrumental music during his late period and explores how to integrate them into one as a whole. |
