Does Math Cramming Work for Vocational Students?

國內各教育階段的學生參加課外坊間補習班甚為盛行,同時隨著高等教育擴張與 教育普及化的趨勢,近年來高職畢業生選擇繼續升學的比例逐年增加,因此以升學考量 為前提,不少高職學生開始進行補習行為,但其補習效益如何?本文運用臺灣高等教育 整合資料庫在92 學年度調查的資料,以補習數學為例,探討高職學生補習數學與其四 技二專入學測驗數學成績的關聯性,篩選後有效樣本數為10,790 人。 研究結果發現(一)高職學生補習數學的人數隨年級而增加;(二)報考統測數學A 版 與統測數學B 版的學生,其補習數學的效益較高,使用數學C 版的考生則否(工程類考 生選用A 版、商管類考生選用B 版、其它醫護類考生則使用C 版數學考卷);(三)二、 三年級學生的數學補習效益顯著,高一時補習數學的效果不明顯;(四)性別、就讀學校 類型、在校成績總平均、家庭年收入、父親職業等背景變項,與高職學生統測數學成績 的表現有顯著關聯性,但控制這些背景變項後並不影響前述的數學補習效益的趨勢或幅 度。最後,本文提出供高職學生、家長、未來研究者參考之建議。
英文摘要
It is prevailing that students of different education stages participate in cram schools. Along with the popularity of higher education, population of vocational students continuing to enter to colleges has increased since 1990s in Taiwan. Considerable vocational students start to take part in cram schooling, it might be reasonable to ask whether math cramming is effective or not? This study aims to investigate the relevance between vocational students participating in math cram and mathematics score in TVE Join College Entrance Exam. A total of 10,790 samples are drawn from the surveys of Taiwan Integrated Postsecondary Education Database. The survey was conducted in the year of 2003. The results show that the population of Vocational students taking part in math cramming increase along with their grades in general, no matter his/her math exam version. (version A for engineering students, version B for business management students, and version C for nursing subjects), Secondly, math cram works for students who took version A and B, but not for students with version C. Thirdly, Unlike 1st grader students, 2nd and 3rd-graders math cramming did have significant effects than otherwise. Finally, while the variables of gender, school type, average score, household income, and father’s occupation are significantly relevant with mathematics score in TVE Join College Entrance Exam, controlling these variables is not likely to change the effects of math cramming to students’ math scores in the regression models, Based on the results, some suggestions are provided for vocational students, parents and future researchers.
