The purpose of this project was to improve hemodialysis patients' ability to respond to a fire emergency. Analysis showed several reasons why patients lacked knowledge about escaping from a fire. These included nursing staff's lack of knowledge, incomplete training of the nursing staff, patients' tendency to forget, incomplete standards and tools for nursing instruction, and lack of a method of evaluation. This project provided strategies for improvement through patient education, development of films and posters, on-the-job training and follow-up review of nurses' training performance, and the development of standards. As a result, patients improved their understanding about how to cope with a fire emergency from 63.7% to 95.5%. Instruction for the nursing staff reached 100% of them. We hope that we can reduce the damage during an emergency by enhancing the ability of nursing staff and patients to escape from a fire. |
