This article is about the experience of sharing post-operative care after hemilaryngectomy, neck dissection, and tracheostomy for a female with hypopharyngeal cancer during a nursing period from January 13th to January 29th, 2008. The patient was confronted with post-operative pains and impaired tissue integrity, as well as physical and psychological disorders. We utilized the concept of functional health patterns as developed by Marjory Gordon to evaluate the issues presented by this patient. The authors not only provided nursing care, but also provided meditation to relieve the pain caused by the operation. Since the patient was affected by the foul smell from the wound, the authors also provided aromatherapy to reduce the smell and taught self care skills for use in her daily life. With continuous care, we encouraged proper emotional release with empathetic, accepting and supportive attitudes in order to reestablish a positive self concept to help her accept the physical outlook with structural and functional changes. We were also able to enhance the quality of nursing care through the sharing of nursing experiences. |
