Objective: To assess the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome. Method: The author conducted a cross-section study from April 2004 to July 2005. A total of 876 men and women (mean [SD] age, 48.6[12.20] years) with 60.3% male were enrolled. The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome by the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III Report (NECP ATPIII; Asia-Pacific guidelines) criteria was analyzed in individuals seeking for health examination at Cheng Ching Hospital in Taiwan. Results: The metabolic syndrome was presented in 22.7% of the women, in 23.3% of the men and in 23.1% of total subjects. For the women, the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome increased with age for a linear trend, but it was not significant in men before the age of 50-59 years. The prevalence in men was higher than that in women before the age of 50-59 years, but that in women was much higher than that in men after the age group. Conclusions: The metabolic syndrome is highly prevalent and age-dependent in individuals seeking for health examination. The family physicians should care about this issue for prevention. |
