A protocol for assessing the performance of passive samplers was devised for gaining the user’s confidence on using them in monitoring gases and vapors in workplaces. This protocol was initially drawn up as a guideline for evaluating all kinds of passive samplers available in this country. The characteristics identified as critical to the performance of passive samplers included: recovery; sampling rate and sampling capacity; reverse diffusion; face velocity; storage stability; accuracy and precision; blank, integrity and shelf life; and the effects of concentration, exposure, time, humidity, interference, temperature and orientation. Observing behavior in the field was also suggested after the laboratory test concerning with the characteristics were completed. Experimental design and data interpretation were established for each characteristic. Experimental design was intended to obtain a maximum information from a reasonable experimentation. Data interpretation was based on statistical treatment. |
