日治時期台灣的蓪草產業－－以新竹地區為探討中心

The Pith Paper Plant Industry in Taiwan During Japanese Rule －－ A Center Research on Hsin-ChuArea

蓪草是一種作為人造花材料與藥材使用的植物，其所製造出的主要產品為蓪草紙，在日治時期為新竹地區的特產之一，也是當地婦女十分重要的家庭副業。因為其為蕃地的產物，所以其原料來源與蕃地情勢有十分密切的關係，直到大正年間時，由於蕃地情勢較為穩定後，其產量才有較穩定的成長。在明治43年至大正3年(1910-1914)期間，由於原料價格的上漲，使得台灣許多地方的蓪草業者紛紛歇業，在此之後，蓪草產業則呈現高度集中於新竹的情形。經由地方州廳極力的促銷，並借由參加各種博覽會與共進會的活動，使得蓪草產品漸為外國市場所了解，其銷售管道除了清末以來的中國市場外，進而擴及到歐美各地。不過也由於其主要是做為外銷出口的產品，所以每當世界經濟不景氣，或中日關係緊張時，其產量或出口數量都會因此而大為下滑。本文為利用日本統治台灣時所做的相關統計資料，希望能勾勒出當時蓪草產業的大致面貌，也因為蓪草產業呈現高度集中於新竹的情形，因此本文將以新竹地區做為討論的中心，並旁及其他地區，以試圖去了解這個失落的產業的歷史。

The pith paper plant is a speciality in the mountain areas of north in Taiwan, with hsin-chu as its main distribution area. It can be processed into artificial flowers and medicine. From 1910 to 1914, because the price of raw materials rose , and make many the pith-paper plant's factories went out of business . The factories had highly concentration on Hsin-Chu area after 1914 owing to this crisis. In this paper, we take the statistical datum during Japanese rule to do analysis .We hope we can describe the pith-paper plant's industry approximate situation in Japanese Rule and try to know the history of this lost industry.
