A device was developed for in-situ real-time measurement of simulated workplace protection factor (SWPF) of respirator cartridges. It is composed of a tin dioxide (SnO2) sensor, a data logger, and a half-mask. With this device, gas concentration data both inside and outside the respirator are collected by an acquisition system every second. The collected data could be calculated to obtain protection factor of gas cartridge. To simulate workplace conditions, a man wearing this device was exposed to low ethanol concentration. The results show that this system is suitable for gas cartridges with SWPF within 20 to 1,500 and responds to SWPF variations promptly. |
