This research investigates the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms for employees in integrated circuit, computer, and communication industries in Hsin-Chu Science-Based Industrial Park. Standardized Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was adopted for the study. The results showed that musculoskeletal symptoms are common for employees in Science Park. The prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among the three industries was different. Employees in communication industry reported significantly higher percentage of shoulder symptoms than employees in integrated circuit and computer industries. The percentage of foot symptoms in communication industry was, on the contrary, significantly lower than those of the other two industries. The difference among the industries might be attributed to the job design of the sectors. Comparison of proportion of symptoms between operators and engineers showed that significant difference exist in integrated circuit industry. The percentage of reported musculoskeletal symptoms of operators was significantly higher than those of the engineers. Such differences were, however, not found in computer and communication industries. The subjective response of operators and engineers as far as whether their symptoms were work-related or not were compared. The only significant result was found in the shoulder symptom in communication industry. Comparisons among experiences on present position were also conducted. Significant results were found in the low back symptoms of integrated circuit industry and the shoulder symptoms of communication industry. |
