The accident of mobile cranes contacting overhead power lines is one of the main causes for worker injuries. A power-line contact alarm system is designed for preventing such accidents. This system has a digital function for setting detection coverage and battery power monitoring and saving circuits to increase reliability. Several methods for calibrating and testing the alarm function of the system are also developed. To evaluate this system, measurements in a laboratory and outside fields have been performed, which include detection coverage, digital setting, and interferences. Using the power-line contact alarm system, operators of mobile cranes can effectively prevent the cranes from contacting the power lines, and the operators and other workers may perform their jobs more safely. Besides, the line-to-ground faults of the transmission/distribution systems caused by contacting power lines can be avoided. |
