To improve the quality of audiometry in labor health examinations, which is indispensible to the early detection of hearing impairment by noise exposure and prevention of permanent and irreversible sequelae, a guideline of pure-tone audiometric tests with reference to the practices adopted by western countries and audiometry in Taiwan is established. The guideline covers a wide range of topics such as maintenance and calibration of equipment, maximum permissible ambient noise levels of test rooms, preparation and instruction of tests, the order of frequency presentation, measurements of hearing threshold levels without masking, and other precautions pertaining to the validity of audiometry, documentation of results, otologic referral, follow-up and dispositions. The guideline will ensure the success of audiometry programs in industrial installations. |
