Passive monitors, especially the coconut shell based charcoal, evaluated by the appropriate validation protocol, should be considered as effective as the active samplers. Thus, two commercially available passive monitors were validated for sampling toluene in the laboratory simulated environments and on field, by following the scheme in the proposed protocol for evaluation of passive monitors in Taiwan, the Republic of China. The performance characteristics being concerned include analytical recovery (or desorption efficiency), effect of face velocity and sampler orientation, sampling rate and capacity, reverse diffusion, storage stability, temperature effects, environmental factor effect, accuracy and precision, sampler blank and integrity, and behavior in the field, Data obtained were used to demonstrate and/or check feasibility of the protocol. |
