A prototype gas sensing device based on the NIOSH standard of Active-End-of-Service-Life Indicator (AESLI) for air purifying respirator was designed. This prototype consists of a tin oxide Sn02 sensor, an adaptor and an electronic circuit. Tests at TLV or lower concentration of 44 chemicals prove that, the sensor is able to detect the concentrations of 25 toxic gases or vapors, including ketones, alcohols, esters, aromatics and alicyclic compounds. Results showed that this device could be activated to generate a warning signal within 10 seconds once the test gas was applied. The adaptor used in the prototype is for housing the sensor and connecting with the cartridge and the respirator. The important features of the AESLI prototype design is that it will not ruin the original respirator and cartridge. |
