The purpose of this project was to establish a method for examining whether safeguarding devices on woodworking radial saw used in the industry met the requirements of mechanical safeguarding codes. In order to study the properties of these safeguarding devices, this research also developed a protocol for testing safeguarding device capacity, through surveys, interviews and performance testing. It was found that most of the new types of woodworking radial saws did not install the 'braking equipment' and anti-kickback pawls required by mechanical safeguarding codes. The results of this study indicated safeguarding devices could not only protect the operator against the injuries, but also could increase the value of the products. The methods for testing the performance of safeguarding devices will be provided to manufacturers and users as a reference to decrease the injuries caused by woodworking saws. |
