Mondor's disease is a rare condition with a majority of cases occurring in the female breast. It is caused by thrombophlebitis of superficial veins, and the clinical picture is a sudden appearance of a subcutaneous cord-like mass. Most of the patients are asymptomatic, but local tenderness or tightness has been reported. The diagnosis is based on clinical presentation, breast examination, and breast ultrasonography. The definitive causes of Mondor's disease are still not completely understood. Some authors think that it may be related to systemic diseases such as coagulation disorders or malignancies. It is usually treated conservatively with analgesics unless there is a recurrence or severe pain. Mondor's disease is self-limited, usually of short duration, and with mild or no symptoms. It may therefore be underreported, and that may explain why so few reports exist. In this report, we describe a case and review the recent literature on the risk factors, clinical course, management and prognosis of this disease. |
