Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare chronic inflammatory bowel condition of unclear etiology. We reported a 41-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain and diarrhea. Laboratory data showed eosinophilia, reverse albumin/globulin ratio and positive stool occult blood test. Colonoscopy revealed multiple hyperemic patches and some shallow ulcers. Microscopically, the sections showed picture of chronic colitis with scattered eosinophils. The patient responded well to oral steroid therapy. The possibility of eosinophilic gastroenteritis should be kept in mind among primary physicians, especially when treating those middle-aged patients with any gastrointestinal symptoms associated with peripheral eosinophilia. |
