Marital violence is a prevalent social problem in Taiwan and around the world. Primary-care physicians should develop skills in the management of marital violence. This article provides recommendations for primary-care physicians who encounter battered women or domestic violence offenders. It begins with a case report of marital violence and then discusses causes of marital violence and steps that primary-care physicians can take to address the problem. These include informing the Domestic Violence Prevention Committee, making danger assessments, making use of Domestic Violence Protection Orders, documenting the violence in victims' medical records, evaluating the physical and mental status of the victim and offender, evaluating the couple's marital problems, and seeking help. The article ends with a report of the authors' experiences of family mediation. |
