The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the smoking cessation in a medical center clinic. A total of 391 subjects were recruited for the study between September 2002 and February 2003. They should be adult and legally covered in the Public Health Insurance Program, with a Fagerström Tolerance Questionnaire (FTQ) score equal to or greater 5, or being smoking 10 or more 10 cigarettes per day. There were 372 (95.14%) subjects available for analysis, 19 were excluded for incomplete demographic data. All of the subjects received the facilitated tobacco cessation education, brief individual counseling and nicotine patch therapy. For the evaluating rate, we contacted the individual subject by phone call at the ends of 3rd and 6th month after the first personal consultation. A seven-day point abstinence rate as the primary outcome was evaluated. Any smoking behavior in last seven days or loss of follow-up was defined as failure. Our results showed that the seven-day point abstinence rate was 41.9% at the 3rd month and 35.2% at the 6th month, respectively. Factors which correlated with the abstinence rate of the 3rd month included number of cigarettes smoked per day, total number of visits, and diabetic history; of the 6th month were: gender, number of cigarettes smoked per day, and total number of visits. There were no significant differences of abstinence rate among various groups of age, duration of smoking, and the educational level. It was shown that there were multiple factors correlated with the abstinence rate of smoking. Abstinence rate could be improved in the smokers by their smoking cessation clinic frequent visits. |
