Ladders are commonly used in the workplace for operation, maintenance, and stacking. However, safety precautions are usually neglected by the workers because of their ease of use. According to statistical data, many injuries are caused by the unsafe use of ladders. Therefore, it is important to investigate the safety factors of this simple device. The objectives of this research are focused on the design, fabrication, and functional testing of two new types of ladders. The goal is to develop low-cost, safe, and simple-to-use ladders. In this project, two prototypes were produced:“a supportive platform ladder” and “an active pneumatic damping system ladder.” The main concept of the former is to set up a platform in the ladder without adding any extra apparatus. The latter relies on an active pneumatic damping system to stabilize the ladder structure from external and internal disturbances. Analysis and experimental results demonstrate the potential of the prototypes produced in this study. |
