The objective of this study is to investigate the work experience of labor safety and health personnel in Kaohsiung’s construction industry. Questionnaire survey was conducted with the subjects (n=493) who were in charge of safety and health management of construction companies and their contractors. 40.8% and 40.4% of the respondents consider the major factors for occupational accidents are behaviors and the safety attitude of labors. The most significant recommendation for health and safety management is to hire full-time safety personnel (30.1%). In order to minimize occupational accidents, the respondents suggest that the Labor Inspection Agency should enforce the basic requirements on training and promotion of labor safety and health (27.4%). Furthermore, the major barrier of safety and health promotion is the awareness of the employers and the employees. Compared with male employees, female workers are more attentive to work place hazards. Senior or vocational high school graduates and professional contractors have better understanding of labor safety and health regulations than others. It was concluded that the promotion of safety awareness through education and training programs, enhancing labor's understanding of regulatory requirements, amending regulations to improve the status of occupational safety and health personnel, and promoting voluntary safety management systems should all contribute to the minimization of occupational accidents of the construction industry. |
