The crowded Taiwan banking sector is looking for room to breathe at last, for example expansion of offshore business. However, Taiwanese banks are typically small and focused on the domestic market. The overall competitiveness of the industry is inadequate, which further limits the potential for banks to expand abroad. Consolidation of the banking sector is needed to address the problem of overbanking, and the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) hopes the nation could create regional Asian banks similar to DBS Bank Ltd of Singapore. The FSC also encourages Taiwanese banks to expand to fast-growing Southeast Asia. Therefore, this paper studies DBS case and aims to draw policy implications for Taiwanese banks' broader expansion, such as strategic alliance, domestic business integration, information platform, and the sovereign wealth fund. |
